Coronary Artery Calcium Testing utilizing a simple CT scan, radiologist can determine the presence and amount of calcium deposited in the walls of five coronary arteries. A healthy artery should have zero or near zero calcium.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is “hardening of the arteries.” The roughened walls of CAD can cause cholesterol buildup called plaque (even with normal cholesterol) and then a blood clot can form on the cholesterol plaque. That is what causes most heart attacks.
So, the presence of calcium in the coronary arteries can warn of an increasing possibility of worse problems. The test is not perfect. It is a screening test.
For people with little or no calcium, it means very little risk of a heart attack-except in diabetics… That’s a long story. For people with a lot of calcium, a score greater than 400, there is a high risk.
For people in between, there is some risk, but the actual risk is hard to determine. It requires further testing and cardiac consultation.
No matter what your score it’s good to know.
